We create and distribute resources to other equine professionals, enabling them to offer top-notch programs to their communities through training, consulting, professional immersions, curricula, session tools, books, and more!
Shannon Knapp, M.A., is founder and president of both Horse Sense of the Carolinas, Inc., an internationally-recognized leader in the field of Equine Assisted Services, and Executive Director of Heart of Horse Sense, a nonprofit dedicated to providing professional Equine Assisted Therapy & Learning for survivors of trauma in Western North Carolina. Shannon has published many books and curricula in the field of Equine Assisted Services, including More Than a Mirror: Horses, Humans and Therapeutic Practices. Shannon is a trainer in Trauma-Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy for Natural Lifemanship, is Eagala Advanced and has an Eagala Military Individual designation, and an instructor of Military Horse Sense: the Fundamentals of Working With Veterans and Horses. A professional in the field since in 2001, she has thousands of hours of direct client contact with a diverse range of diagnoses.
Horse Sense of the Carolinas has long supported equine-assisted professionals who want to build ethical, sustainable businesses that help both humans and horses. Over the years, hundreds of hours of educational videos and practitioner-led discussions were created to address the real challenges of this work. While our live membership offerings have evolved, this body of knowledge remains deeply valuable.

Heart of Horse Sense was founded in 2014 to support quality, professional trauma-informed equine-assisted services for Veterans, First Responders, At-Risk Youth & their families. In 2024, our mission expanded to include the facilitation of these services. Our vision is that every trauma survivor has access to counseling and learning with horses.
