Introduction to Natural Lifemanship and TF-EAP

Introduction to Natural Lifemanship & TF-EAP™ is a one-day training that covers the basic science and principles at the foundations of Natural Lifemanship.

Trainers: Bettina Shultz-Jobe & Shannon Knapp
To register for this training, click here!
Tickets are $115/person

This training is for anybody who wants to learn about brain development, trauma-informed care, and the role of connected, attuned relationships in promoting positive growth, well-being, healing and recovery. Participants will gain foundational knowledge and a basic understanding of the Natural Lifemanship principles for building connected relationships. The introductory training does not replace the Fundamentals of NL training nor does it cover the material we teach at that training in as much depth; but, it is meant to provide a solid overview for a minimal time commitment and expense.

Who should attend?

Anybody interested in the following questions should consider attending the Introduction to NL & TF-EAP:

  • How does the brain develop? What are the effects of trauma?
  • Why does connection matter? What does connection have to do with the brain?
  • Because connection matters, what are the implications for how we build relationships?
  • How do the NL principles for building connected relationships support healthy development, mental health and recovery?
  • What do these principles look like and feel like in action?*

*Some, but not all, introductory trainings will include horses. When it is possible to include horses at these trainings, participants will observe live demonstrations and may be given the opportunity to experience the NL principles in relationship with a horse (no horse experience is necessary). When trainings do not include horses, videos and other kinds of activities may be used to demonstrate and experience the principles. Each individual training description will indicate whether or not horses will be included in the training.

NOTE: This training does NOT count toward NL Certification. The entry level training required for NL Certification is the Fundamentals of Natural Lifemanship.

IMPORTANT: Due to space limitations at our trainings we have a strict refund and transfer policy. Please review it prior to completing your purchase. When you accept our terms and conditions upon checkout, you will be agreeing to this policy.

Natural Lifemanship is an approved continuing education provider. 4.5 Continuing Education (CE) Hours are awarded to eligible attendees who complete this training. See our terms and conditions for details regarding our CE policy.

Rhythmic Riding Immersion

Dates:

Friday, August 17 - Sunday, August 19, 2018
Date and location to be confirmed

During this three-day intensive workshop, you will delve deeply into Rhythmic Riding™, the mounted component of TF-EAP.

One of the greatest challenges of doing or facilitating mounted work in TF-EAP is that people tend to lose a focus on connection and instead resort to power, domination and control while on the horse’s back. Although they may work hard at building a connected relationship on the ground, people will naturally feel it is their responsibility to control the horse once they are on his or her back. Because of this we are very careful and intentional about how we introduce mounted work in sessions, and how we teach it to EAP practitioners at our trainings.

The purpose of mounted work in TF-EAP is to deepen the connection the client experiences with the horse while leveraging the physiological support that the movement of the horse provides.

Properly facilitated by the therapy team, mounted work provides a powerful opportunity for the client to deepen their sense of connection with themselves and with their horse while experiencing somatosensory input of a quality that reorganizes the brain. Bottom up regulation is promoted by engaging the brainstem with rhythmic, patterned, repetitive, bilateral movement that the client does not have to produce for themselves. With the lower regions regulated and organized the client is better able to access the midbrain regions responsible for connection.

Participants will learn:

  1. How to tell when areas of the brain are regulated or dysregulated
  2. Ways to promote bottom up regulation with various kinds of sensory input
  3. Ways to teach top down regulation capitalizing on the eustress provided while mounted
  4. How to introduce mounted work in a way that promotes bottom up and/or top down regulation while deepening the client’s sense of connection with self and with their horse
  5. When it is appropriate to dismount and practice regulation skills outside the round pen
  6. How the equine professional may discern when to maintain the connection with the horse on a lead rope or release that connection to the client who is mounted
  7. The difference between making a request by connecting with the horse versus by controlling her
  8. How to integrate music in Rhythmic Riding

About the Rhythmic Riding Intensive

  • We use both didactic and experiential instruction that consists of groundwork and mounted work. The training will not take place entirely on horseback.
  • The immersion is limited to 10-12 people with no more than 4 participants per trainer.
  • This training provides the foundation for learning how to do trauma processing on the back of a horse (a training that will be offered beginning in 2018).
  • The Fundamentals of Natural Lifemanship is prerequisite to this training.
  • Beginning in 2018, the NL Intensive is also a prerequisite to this training.

This training is required for Advanced NL Certification (available in 2018!).

Relationship Logic Immersion

Dates

Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 - Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018
Dates and Location to be confirmed

Delve deeper into Relationship Logic™

The Relationship Logic Immersion offers 3-Days of Intensive Relational Work with an Untrained Horse.

The Relationship Logic (RL) Immersion is a 3-day training that focuses on applying NL principles on the ground as you develop a connected relationship with an untrained horse. Participant-trainer ratio is limited to no more than 4:1, with a maximum of 10-12 participants per training.  Relationship Logic is one of the two core components of TF-EAP, along with Rhythmic Riding. Where the client spends most of his or her time, or in what sequence, is entirely dependent on the needs of the particular client. Therapy teams must know the Natural Lifemanship model well enough to discern how and when to use NL ground work and when to use mounted work. Whether the relationship between client and horse is occurring on the ground or mounted, Relationship Logic is always in effect.

Why We Partner with Untrained Horses

Historically, horses have been taught to do the right thing because they were afraid not to. Training techniques were based on fear and intimidation. Natural Lifemanship uses humane, psychological techniques to teach horses to do the right thing because they have come to believe that cooperating with humans (rather than resisting, ignoring, or appeasing them) is the best way to get their needs met. The principles used to teach this are applicable in a wide variety of human interactions. The changes people must make within themselves to be able to apply these principles transfer to many life situations.

Gaining an in depth understanding of the method and mechanics of building a relationship will give you clearer insight into helping your clients build functional and fulfilling relationships through TF-EAP. The benefit of using untrained horses is that you are able to learn relationship principles in their most pure form with a horse who is virtually a “blank slate” when it comes to relating with humans.

TheRL Immersion is required for Advanced Certification (available in 2018!).

The NL Intensive is a pre-requisite for this training.
