Recent Research

Two research papers have been loaded to the EAGALA website, and I urge you to look at them, especially if you want to work with at-risk youth or couples. The two articles are "The Effects of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy on the Psychosocial Functioning of At-Risk Adolescents ages 12-18," by Bettina N. Schultz. This is the Masters Thesis that was reported on at the general assembly dinner at the 2007 EAGALA conference. Link to it at the EAGALA website here.

Also of interest is the "Equine Facilitated Couples Therapy and Solution Focused Couples Therapy: A Comparison Study," by Leslie A Russell-Martin, M.S. LMFT. This is her unpublished dissertation. Link to it at the EAGALA website here.

Another article was published in the peer-reviewed Society & Animals magazine in 2007. Entitled "The effectiveness of equine-assisted experiential therapy: Results of an open clinical trial," by Klontz, B.T., Bivens, A., Leinart, D. & Klontz, T. Link to it at the EAGALA website here.

Finally, there is the "Horses that Heal: The Effectivenes of Equine Assisted Growth and Learning on the Behavior of Students Diagnosed with Emotional Disorder," by Aimee Tetreault. Link to it at the EAGALA website here.

Meet Dr. Kay Trotter

Kay TrotterDr. Kay Trotter, the woman whose pioneering research is blazing new paths for all of us, was our honored guest for a recent Horse Sense of the Carolinas telecall.  This past spring, her dissertation at the University of North Texas became the seminal work of empirical research proving that equine assisted psychotherapy is not only AS effective as traditional clinical therapy – in some cases, it’s even MORE beneficial.

In THE EFFICACY OF EQUINE ASSISTED GROUP COUNSELING WITH AT-RISK CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS, Dr. Trotter compared and contrasted the experiences of youngsters who participated in a 12-week equine assisted therapy program with those who remained in a classroom setting for traditional counseling.  In a nutshell, the results proved what we’ve seen unfolding daily in our practices – horse therapy cuts through the clutter, and gets authentic results.

During the hour-long telecall, she shared the inside story of how she conducted her research, how the students, parents and teachers involved responded to it, and positive, practical applications of her work in our own practices.

Now, Horse Sense is pleased to make this information available to you.
